Stinging pain on ankle bone

Posted by Alexandra C. on 6/08/02 at 16:05 (086787)

My husband has been complaining about stinging pain on the outside bone of his ankle, especially when we take a long hike. At first we thought it was his boot rubbing against it, so he stopped and cut a piece out of the boot in that area, but to no avail, the stinging pain continued. What could this be??? And how can we treat it?????

Hi Alexandra:

Id the pain on the inside(medial) of the ankle or the outside(lateral)? If it is on the inside this may be the beginning of tarsal tunnel syndrome. If on the outside could be the Sural nerve. You could have it checked out with an NCV (Nerve Conduction Velocity) test.

Thank you for the response. It is on the outside of the ankle. If it persists I'll see our doc. Just so unusual- even against the sheet in bed it feels like a bee sting. Went hiking with low hiking boots and no problems though. Thanks again.

Alexandra:

Again it sounds like your describing the sural nerve or describing sinus tarsi syndrome. Try icing it and Ibuprofen. If no relief see a Doc. Good luck!
