heel pain

Posted by alana c. mcguire on 9/29/02 at 01:57 (096418)

I have been having heel pain mostly around the outer edge of my right foot. yes, it hurts when i first get up and when i am sitting. i start limping and some days very painful. it sounds like plantar facilitis. i am a nurse, on my feet a lot now for 21 years. i am overweight and want to start walking, will it hinder that or make it better? can you tell me if a good support in my shoes will help. i wear mostly new balance tennis shoes and when i am home wear socks and no shoes. sometimes i sit on the couch and rub my heel because it hurts so much. do i need to see a podiatrist or should i try other things first? thank you, a. mcguire rn

My opinion is this and I am not a doc. In this order:
1. STOP going barefoot...wear shoes at allll times!
2. Get to a podiatrist right away.
3. Don't start an exercise program that is weight bearing...try swimming for now until your pain subsides. Avoid walking until this is under control.
4. Check your shoes for wear...perhaps you need a new pair?
5. Read the pf book on this site.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have been diagnosed with a heel spur on my left foot. I have been on anti-inflammitories since May. I have had 11 ultrasounds; but nothing helped. My doctor gave me 2 options: (1) a cast for 4 weeks, crutches for 2 weeks, or (2) a cortizone shot. I opted for the cast. I had the cast removed last Monday. Last week I was on 2 crutches; this week he has me using 1 crutch. My dilemma: My foot still hurts. I also sit on the couch and rub it. I am afraid to tell my doctor for fear of what he may suggest. Any suggestions?
