Sciatica, supports? Knee pain, Phase 4/Birkenstock/Superfeet/GoodFeet verdict?

Posted by Alex D on 11/06/02 at 00:47 (099476)

Hello,

My mother suffers from sciatic pain towards the end of the day. She has a very high arch on her feet--perhaps too high?

She has been to chiropractors and other specialists. Ibuprofen seems to be the only thing that helps a little. I am 99% certain that noone has suggested Alznner-type orthotics. Should I surprise her and see if she feels any better? Worth a shot, right?

My father also has knee pain sometimes... he and I have a very low arch--not quite a flat foot (come to think of it sometimes my knee hurts in cold weather). I was in excruiciating pain when I tried rollerblading (plantar fascia probably), but other than that I ocassionally get pain in my arch area from walking fast and running. That's why I am researching orthotics. Really curious about Phase IV vs. Superfeet vs. Birkenstock vs. Good Feet. I have read for a few days now, and have not found a definitive answer on how they compare. Do they all support the 4 arches? My parents live in Puerto Vallarta, and thus no orthotic infomercials or stores there.... I would have to take the inserts to them.

I went to the Good Feet store last week, and their hard-orthotic felt sort of good... Unlike anything I had ever tried before (who knew we had more than one arch to worry about).. but the price is steep (I'm still in College).

Thank you all for your answers!

Alex, 26

Hi Alex,
I made some orthotics for a friend of mine that had the same type of pain as your mother. The seemed to help, but he ended up having surgery anyway. As for the companies you mentioned, except Birkenstock, I basically stick out my tongue and blow raspberries at them. ppppffttttt.

I do not recommend the Phase 4 or Goodfeet. Those guys basically have a generic device that does not fit your foot like it should. Although it is not mandatory (hopefully soon though) for someone to be licenced to dispense foot orthotics, I would suggest finding someone who fabricates orthotics for a living to give you some advice. I would suggest locating a C.Ped, DPM or Orthopedic doc in your area as inquire about their pain and what to do about it.
Superfeet, in my opinion only, is ok. I like Birks too.

Hopefully this makes sense. I am looking around for my coffee as I type this.

Read a little on the Silicone Dynamic orthotics on the home page of this site...see if anything you read there appeals to you for both cases.
they work for me.
