Gastroc Slide

It goes by other names as well, gastroc release or Strayer's procedure. What is it? I have heard of a small number of Drs that do this procedure for heel pain.

Bob:

The Strayer procedure is only one form of gastrocnemius release -- probably the most simple one and possibly the least effective.
A tight gastrocnemius achilles complex is a prime factor behind many cases of plantar fasciitis (do a search on this site as there is a lot of discussion on this topic). Lenthening of the gastrocnemius aponeurosis (portion of the big calf muscle that makes up much of the achilles tendon) has been considered an adjunctive procedure but more recently some are viewing it as a primary procedure for PF.
