Okay for pacemaker patients?

Posted by Don S on 11/11/02 at 09:42 (099781)

Is this treatment safe for patients with cardiac pacemakers. I am 100%
dependant on my pacemaker.

If you are talking about ESWT this is one area you want to avoid . It is listed as a precaution.

Don.. When done with the proper precautions (a cardiologist and pacemaker representative in attendance), the procedure can certainly safely be done. We routinely treat patients with cardiac pacemakers with lithotripsy for their kidney stones, strictly following a protocol developed and used by multiple centers.

Yes, it is listed as a precaution. I think they are being cautious with this precaution. Scotts point below is well taken. I think that, in the future, we can proceed with ESWT on pacemaker patients with the guidance of the patient's cardiologist.
