Chinook

Posted by john h on 11/29/02 at 09:26 (101397)

Chinook besides being a dog in weather terns is a warm dry wind that blows down the slopes of the Rocky Mountains in winter and early spring. As the wind blows down the mountain slopes it increases in temperature about 1 degree F for every 180' of descent. Pilots in small aircraft and helicopters need to always be aware of these as they can play havoc with your aircraft. We experienced these frequently in Cheyenne which is at the base of the Rockies.Probably tooke its name from the Chinook Indians. This was part of our weather training in flight school.
