How many of you suffer from depression or stress after being dx with tts? How do you Cope?

I am new to this board and hope some of you can help.

TTS has been a major lifestyle change. I am an independent person who always loved to hike in the woods, walk, ride bikes, etc...I have to admit this sitting around is tough. And I can't go to a store without my hubby or a friend to stand in the check out line for me. Aside from that I am a hs teacher. The kids have been great but it's tough for me to be off my feet for long. I just crawl home to the sofa in the evening. I finally broke down and got a small scooter for my classroom. I only use it when the pain interferes with my ability to work. How do some of you cope? Any ideas for stress? Would a psychologist or counseler help with coping? HELP....I need some fresh ideas.

Marie,

A psychologist or counselor MIGHT help with coping -- it depends on how understanding they are concerning the effects of intense chronic pain conditions. Relaxation techniques can be very helpful, because people usually tense up when they are in pain, and the tension increases the pain level --a very unpleasant loop to get caught in! Relaxation-based hypnosis techniques can help you to raise your pain threshhold and improve your tolerance, allowing you to function more efficiently.

Unfortunately, for most of us the FIRST battle seems to be just getting our family, friends, colleagues, and doctors to TAKE TTS SERIOUSLY! It is hard for anyone who has not had something like this happen in their lives to understand just how much a person's lifestyle is affected by something like this. I'm convinced that the PAIN, itself, can cause depression when it is unrelenting.

One thing that helps a lot of people is a fortunate coincidence. The tricyclic antidepressant drugs, such as Elavil, have been found quite effective for reducing nerve pain -- and if they're prescribed at dosages adequate to help with depression, too, these drugs can 'kill two birds with one stone'. Tricyclic antidepressants FUNCTION AS PAIN RELIEVERS to control nerve-based pain, and they can also help you to cope with all those non-voluntary changes that TTS is making in your life. Some of the SSRI antidepressants -- especially Paxil -- are also believed to help relieve nerve pain and can serve the same double function.

It does help a lot, sometimes, just to have someone to express your feelings to about all of this who is able to actually UNDERSTAND what you're going through -- and for that, you've already taken a positive step by posting on this website. There are a lot of people here who understand the kinds of things that you are going through... and we're here for you any time you want to 'vent' your sadness, anger, frustration -- or all of the above!

Marie - I think Sharon suggestions are all great...

For me, I had a lot of stress from not knowing or understanding what was happening to me. I did become depressed from losing SO much of my life, and later I was depressed because in my case - my lifestyle changes appear to be permanent.

I am a lot better than I used to be, physically and emotionally.

For now - I highly suggest getting into see that counsellor asap. You'll want to find out if medication will be needed to get the depression under control.

For the day to day blahs - I highly recommend watching as many comedies on TV or movie as possible (laughing till you almost wet yourself will make you feel better). Sitting and listening to classical music (I'd recommend Mozart). Read, and do the things that you've never had time to do. Spend time yaking on the phone with old friends while you put your feet up.

I've gone from being a very type a personality, to somewhere more like a b+. I never sat still for a second (I still find it difficult) - but I have accepted that there are reasons this has happened to me. I've seen the benefit of learning just to take things slower, and to sometimes just sit on the porch and watch the birds.

Sounds pretty lame when I type it, but it works for me.

Thanks for your advice I plan on making an appointment in the morning wwith a psychologist and will take the names of the medications you suggested. Do you know of any special shoes for tts? where can I purchase? I want an indoor shoe but would really like to find some type of hiking boot. I am determined to do a little hiking this winter....even if its just around my yard. Does anyone horseback ride? Mabie I could let the horse walk for me. I don't know how I'd get up on it, that would be comical itself.

I live in northern Indiana. We have a state park nearby with paved trails I have heard they have a special 4wheel drive scooter/wheel chair for people with disabilites. Mabie I'll give it a whirl.

hi marie: wendy's suggestions are great, and i'm glad you're getting right on with that appointment! pf and/or tts is always depressing, and if you don't jump up and get help before the depression grabs a good hold on you, it can become devastating. i waited too long myself, so this is a topic close to my heart. get a counselor, get medication if it's needed, and -- here's where i fell down -- keep on doing absolutely everything you still can in life that gives you joy and keeps your spirit up and moving. don't let the fact that you can't do everything you want right now keep you from doing anything at all!

let's see, some more thoughts:
Keep a journal.
Do some fun artwork (i like watercolor and collage).
Invite people over! don't forget to stay social.
Try some new crafts (make/decorate your own notepaper, try knitting or something similar).
Start a scrapbook -- favorite quotes? favorite notes from family/friends? columns by favorite journalists? funny headlines or witty short articles from the newspaper?
Study up on a subject you've always been interested in and never got around to.

ok, i think my brain has run dry for now. do stay on this site for companionship with people who know exactly what you're going through. good luck to you,

Marie - you might want to try Birkenstock sandals for around the house (I wear them all the time). Horseback riding might be fine for your feet, you'd have to give it a try (will give you sore legs and a sore bum though). Can you ride a bike without pain? Staying active is important...deep water running or swimming might be okay as well.

SHOES: As for shoes, I've had very good experience Dansko clogs. The clogs are such that except for formal occasions you can wear them with most anything. When I went in to the shoe stoe run by the buy who makes orthotics and caters to lots of feet problems, I described my problem and he recommended the Dankso. I also wear birkenstocks for slippers around the house. There are two (maybe more, my store had two) Birkenstocks that seem to be designed as slippers (but priced like regular shoes!). They have flannel or sheepskin on the inside. As slippers they are expensive. As a treatment, they are relatively inexpensive if you consider how long you will be able to keep them. Lots of people on this board seem to like Birkenstocks for all day.

As for other suggestions, I gave up tennis, just as I was becoming locally competitive. I LOVE tennis. It was very hard and I swore I wouldn't give up tennis. But I did. Now I paint, and I love it (and I've never painted before in my life). I also have thought about going back to my piano (that sits lonely in the front room) but I imagine that will wait until I finish my school program. So basically, I guess I've traded sports for the arts. It's not a bad trade-off. I find that I can get in 1/2 hour of the following exercises if I haven't overdone it doing other things: biking (making sure to place my foot so it doesn't flex as I pedal), stair-stepping (after putting on an OTC foot brace to keep my foot from flexing too much), swimming (sometimes I don't kick so that I don't flex my feet, although I haven't done this much cuz getting to the pool is a pain and doesn't do much to prevent osteoporosis). I figure I could also do rowing but I don't like it, and I never do it right and mess up my back.

I ordered a pair of birkenstock low ankle hiking boot. We have very snowy/icey winters here and I need a good shoe for outside use...if nothing else just for going from my house to my car. I thought I'd try this first to see how I like them and go from there. I live in a rural area that doesn't have alot of shopping. Plus shopping equals pain, so I only go when I absolutely have to. The internet is probably my best resource. I will look at Dansko. Thank you! Thank you!

I am a a high school art teacher. I love to paint and draw so I congratulate all of you who have taken up the arts. It was a painting that sent my feet over the edge. I did an 8 foot high by 192 foot long piece in one week, outside in 100 plus degree temps. I thought I had a bit of arthritis so I ignored the pain and kept working. I am a fast aggressive super realistic painter. I can honestly say that my last large piece had to be transported in a semi.It was a backdrop for a marching band. Has anyone seen 'Drumline'? The last place it was set up was at the RCA dome in Indy. The band came in fourth place in the state and people still talk about the painting on the marching band site. I don't do much painting during the winter months because of my schedule. But mabie I should change my attitude and go for it. I usually work very large so I will have to change my attitude or figure out how to work large and stay off my feet.

I understand living in rural areas is quite gorgeous - but often makes shopping difficult (oh the tradeoffs we must make). As a urban/suburban kid, I must say rural life is not part of my experience - except as 'getaways'. In any case, I have a URL for a shoe store that I've been very satisfied with and carries Dansko & Birdenstock & several other shoes catering to feet problems. If you are interested, let me know. I imagine they can work with people long distance.

Yes I'd be very interested in some on line shoe stores. Catalogs would be great too. Actually I live downtown....in a small vacation/resort area in the summer and college town in the winter. We do have a small cabin in the woods....it's much easier for me to get around there.

This isn't really an on-line shoe store. But I imagine if you describe your problem, can send an outline of your foot (may have to step in ink), and have an internet or phone to talk with them, something can be worked out. http://www.footperformance.com/
Another option is to look in the yellow pages and see if there is a shoe store that indicates it is run by a pedorthist (folks who make the Rx arch supports). All stores run to pedorthists aren't all of equal value, but if you have nothing else to go on, it's probably more likely they can help than a garden-variety shoe store - even ones advertising special attention and quality shoes (IMHO). Another added advantage of these shoe stores is they tend to have smaller selection - cuz they don't carry lots of shoes that aren't good for you, so you don't have to wade through lots of stuff - and then they do have the kind of shoes you want. My experience (in two cities - not exactly a comprehensive research project) is they are not in malls, so don't require great amounts of walking to get there either.

Hi Marie,

Relieving some of your stress could be as simple as taking something to sleep. There are many meds available, I happen to take Diazapam, and have for a few years. Like anything, you have to be careful. I trust my doc, he has made life much more bearable for me.

I'd also keep a daily pain diary, in case you end up seeing someone like a pain management specialist. A compassionate PM doc, can be a lifesaver. Also, keep accurate records of all medicines and treatments you try. It will help you down the road if you ever become unable to work.

I hope this is just a temporary setback for you.

I agree wholeheartedly about the importance of regularly getting a good night's sleep. Pain usually seems to bother people a LOT more at night, and with TTS it can be really hard to sleep. Not sleeping, of course, makes everything seem much more gloomy and stressful...

Anyway, the one I take is Ambien. It is supposed to have fewer side effects than the older drugs that help you sleep.

The real (specific) experts in shoes and how footwear can affect foot problems are the pedorthists, or C.Peds. They are sometimes found in stores that specialize in orthopedic shoes. They can also make orthotics, and they DON'T always insist on making the rigid kind that feel like you have a (well-shaped) rock in your shoe! There are a couple of them who sometimes answer questions on these foot boards, and you might find their advice very helpful. To find one NEAR YOU, bring up this site and type in your zip code:

I was a high school math teacher for 32 years, but an unsuccessful TTS surgery and a doctor at a pain clinic who injured my sacroiliac by twisting my back too hard forced me to retire last year.
I never sat down or used the overhead projector until I got TTS from a poorly healed sprained ankle. Maybe you can sit and let the kids bring their work to you.
I too was very athletic before this happened. By all means, try the conservative measures first. I found that Neurontin helped diminish the burning type nerve pain.Sticking my foot, for 20 minutes, in an ice-cube-floating pan of water at night also helped.

What works for one, may not work for another!! However, Sharon is definitely on the right track! I used Neurontin for my TTS, but soon realized that after using it a few days, I had angina (chest pain), and also experienced very high blood pressure) which are both side effects of taking Neuronton, HOWEVER, these symptoms only affect very few people, and I was just an exception. So, therefore, I can not take Neurontin, which is a very good drug for MOST people who have TTS! The only suggestions that I could make for PF, (which to me, is more pain that TTS, is to use Ibuprofen 600-800mg 3 to 4 times a day. You should also try wearing high-heeled shoes constantly for at least 2 weeks. That should help considerably. TTS is a burning pain, while PF, to me, is a dull and very aggravating pain! Both are bad, but I had rather have the TTS, rather than the PF any day!!!!!!!

I just wanted to add that if you do see a psychologist, you should try to get one that deals with chronic pain. That is what I was told from the pain management clinic I went to. It has been a God sent, as thes Docs.,I think understand the affect pain can have on one's life more than others.
I have been seeing one since July,2002. Besides the pain being depressing,I been fired from my JOB of 25 years as SBC's Disability People feel I should have been working, but my DOCS. wouldn't release me to go back to work and I have a desk job. My Pod wanted them to take the responsabilty if I were to fall at work. He asked for some accomadations,but disability center never gave him a direct answer. He was afraid if he released me too soon and I fell or something at work that he would get sued. You see besides PF & TTS I also have fibromyalgia.(About 8 years now from a car accident in 1994.) This has made my recovery from TT Surgery more painfull and long. I had my surgery April 22,2002 and still having some problem mostly with indurance. I haven't started my walking back up again yet,but I have a recummbent bike and I can ride it about 10 miles(50 min). I live in Milw Wis. and I'm just a little cautious about slipping or stumbling and re-injuring my foot.
Just to update those on the board. I'm still working with Dr. Kiper on the SDO'S. I received a second pair,but they seem too full and put alot of pressure on my arch, the ball of my foot and big toe of my right foot and this seems to make my foot swell and my ankle ache.
SBC Disability Center has looked at my case for the third time and they are sticking with their denial. I talked with one of my Docs who recieved a phone call from a doc with the disability center and he said that this doc already had his mind made up against me before he even talked to him.
Hope to hear something from my attorney next week. Holidays have slowed things up a bit.

The last place it was set up was at the RCA dome in Indy. The band came in fourth place in the state and people still talk about the painting on the marching band site. I don't do much painting during the winter months because of my schedule. But mabie I should change my attitude and go for it. I usually work very large so I will have to change my attitude or figure out how to work large and stay off my feet.

I understand living in rural areas is quite gorgeous - but often makes shopping difficult (oh the tradeoffs we must make). As a urban/suburban kid, I must say rural life is not part of my experience - except as 'getaways'. In any case, I have a URL for a shoe store that I've been very satisfied with and carries Dansko & Birdenstock & several other shoes catering to feet problems. If you are interested, let me know. I imagine they can work with people long distance.

Yes I'd be very interested in some on line shoe stores. Catalogs would be great too. Actually I live downtown....in a small vacation/resort area in the summer and college town in the winter. We do have a small cabin in the woods....it's much easier for me to get around there.

This isn't really an on-line shoe store. But I imagine if you describe your problem, can send an outline of your foot (may have to step in ink), and have an internet or phone to talk with them, something can be worked out. http://www.footperformance.com/
Another option is to look in the yellow pages and see if there is a shoe store that indicates it is run by a pedorthist (folks who make the Rx arch supports). All stores run to pedorthists aren't all of equal value, but if you have nothing else to go on, it's probably more likely they can help than a garden-variety shoe store - even ones advertising special attention and quality shoes (IMHO). Another added advantage of these shoe stores is they tend to have smaller selection - cuz they don't carry lots of shoes that aren't good for you, so you don't have to wade through lots of stuff - and then they do have the kind of shoes you want. My experience (in two cities - not exactly a comprehensive research project) is they are not in malls, so don't require great amounts of walking to get there either.

Hi Marie,

Relieving some of your stress could be as simple as taking something to sleep. There are many meds available, I happen to take Diazapam, and have for a few years. Like anything, you have to be careful. I trust my doc, he has made life much more bearable for me.

I'd also keep a daily pain diary, in case you end up seeing someone like a pain management specialist. A compassionate PM doc, can be a lifesaver. Also, keep accurate records of all medicines and treatments you try. It will help you down the road if you ever become unable to work.

I hope this is just a temporary setback for you.

I agree wholeheartedly about the importance of regularly getting a good night's sleep. Pain usually seems to bother people a LOT more at night, and with TTS it can be really hard to sleep. Not sleeping, of course, makes everything seem much more gloomy and stressful...

Anyway, the one I take is Ambien. It is supposed to have fewer side effects than the older drugs that help you sleep.

The real (specific) experts in shoes and how footwear can affect foot problems are the pedorthists, or C.Peds. They are sometimes found in stores that specialize in orthopedic shoes. They can also make orthotics, and they DON'T always insist on making the rigid kind that feel like you have a (well-shaped) rock in your shoe! I was a high school math teacher for 32 years, but an unsuccessful TTS surgery and a doctor at a pain clinic who injured my sacroiliac by twisting my back too hard forced me to retire last year.
I never sat down or used the overhead projector until I got TTS from a poorly healed sprained ankle. Maybe you can sit and let the kids bring their work to you.
I too was very athletic before this happened. By all means, try the conservative measures first. I found that Neurontin helped diminish the burning type nerve pain.Sticking my foot, for 20 minutes, in an ice-cube-floating pan of water at night also helped.

What works for one, may not work for another!! However, Sharon is definitely on the right track! I used Neurontin for my TTS, but soon realized that after using it a few days, I had angina (chest pain), and also experienced very high blood pressure) which are both side effects of taking Neuronton, HOWEVER, these symptoms only affect very few people, and I was just an exception. So, therefore, I can not take Neurontin, which is a very good drug for MOST people who have TTS! The only suggestions that I could make for PF, (which to me, is more pain that TTS, is to use Ibuprofen 600-800mg 3 to 4 times a day. You should also try wearing high-heeled shoes constantly for at least 2 weeks. That should help considerably. TTS is a burning pain, while PF, to me, is a dull and very aggravating pain! Both are bad, but I had rather have the TTS, rather than the PF any day!!!!!!!

I just wanted to add that if you do see a psychologist, you should try to get one that deals with chronic pain. That is what I was told from the pain management clinic I went to. It has been a God sent, as thes Docs.,I think understand the affect pain can have on one's life more than others.
I have been seeing one since July,2002. Besides the pain being depressing,I been fired from my JOB of 25 years as SBC's Disability People feel I should have been working, but my DOCS. wouldn't release me to go back to work and I have a desk job. My Pod wanted them to take the responsabilty if I were to fall at work. He asked for some accomadations,but disability center never gave him a direct answer. He was afraid if he released me too soon and I fell or something at work that he would get sued. You see besides PF & TTS I also have fibromyalgia.(About 8 years now from a car accident in 1994.) This has made my recovery from TT Surgery more painfull and long. I had my surgery April 22,2002 and still having some problem mostly with indurance. I haven't started my walking back up again yet,but I have a recummbent bike and I can ride it about 10 miles(50 min). I live in Milw Wis. and I'm just a little cautious about slipping or stumbling and re-injuring my foot.
Just to update those on the board. I'm still working with Dr. Kiper on the SDO'S. I received a second pair,but they seem too full and put alot of pressure on my arch, the ball of my foot and big toe of my right foot and this seems to make my foot swell and my ankle ache.
SBC Disability Center has looked at my case for the third time and they are sticking with their denial. I talked with one of my Docs who recieved a phone call from a doc with the disability center and he said that this doc already had his mind made up against me before he even talked to him.
Hope to hear something from my attorney next week. Holidays have slowed things up a bit.
