Need to find an Orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist.

Posted by Joe B. on 1/22/03 at 06:53 (106255)

Due to insurance restrictions, I'm unable to choose a Pod. I have to go with the one that is 'capitated' with my primary. On the other hand, I can go to an orthopaedic specialist that is in my network. Can anyone recommend a good foot/ankle orthopaedist, that has experience with flat feet, in the Philadelphia and/or surrounding areas that accepts Aetna HMO?? Thanks.

Joe, doctor Zuckerman is one of the doctors that conitinually give support to this board. I have seen him twice. he is very kind and professional. He is located in woodbury, new jersey. I am sure that he would work something out for you if you contact him. I flew 500 miles to see him due to his reputation. This is his website and his phone number is there. http://www.eswtusa.com/

Joe,

Dr. Wapner and Dr. Hecht are very well known and respected foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons that practice in Philadelphia (MCP-Hahnemann). They are more than qualified to evaluate and treat foot and ankle problems. I practice in Philadelphia and participate with Aetna/US Healthcare, so I'm very familiar with the rules and regulations. If you have seen the podiatrist that is capitated to your primary physician, and you are unhappy with that podiatrist, you can make arrangements to be seen by another podiatrist that participates with Aetna/US Healthcare that is not capitated to your primary physician. I evaluated a patient this morning that had Aetna/US Healthcare and was not happy with the podiatrist capitated to her primary. Speak with your primary care provider or make an appointment with Drs. Wapner/Hecht. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call my office at 215-725-1092.

It's not that I'm not happy with the 'capitated' pod, it's that fact that some/most won't get involved with flat feet surgery. I've called around to some of the local pods in my area and they won't do it. And I'm almost sure that my current one won't either. I just changed primaries so I don't know who the pod is. Are you and Dr. Hecht in the same practice?? Have both of you ever performed flat feet corrective surgery?? If so, how many and were they successful?

Does an 'out of capitation' referral sound familiar?? I think that is what is needed to get out of capitation??? Did Aetna/USHC give this patient a hard time because she wanted to see another pod?? I'm actually looking for a 2nd opinion for surgery. I know what's involved and I'm trying to make up my mind.

I did see both of your names listed in the 'Top Docs' section of the Phila. magazine and it has both of you listed at Pennsylvania Hospital. That's not the same as MCP, is it?? Thanks for the response and I hope to hear from you.

Dave,
I just got back from Marshfield. Dr. Schuppert is an orthopedic foot/ankle surgeon. He is a very nice man about 58-60 and takes a conservative approach. I thought I had tts but both he and a neurologist at Marshfield aren't sure since it is so rare.
Otherwise you can't go wrong with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn.
If you go to Marshfield let me know as that is where I'm going to be treated.
Good Luck,
Terry
