A bunion is a bone deformity at the large toe joint (first metatarsal joint). There is a prominence of the bone which is from hypertrophy (thickening) of the bone and usually an angular deformity of the metatarsal. Bunions are caused by heredity, biomechanical causes and shoe gear, and in some cases arthritis or trauma. Bunions can be treated conservatively with a change of shoes, injection(s), oral medication, pads, etc., which all treat the symptoms and will not 'get rid' of the bunion. Surgery is the only way to actually eliminate the bunion, although the other methods I mentioned can relieve the symptoms.
