seavers disease

Posted by Kay K. on 3/18/03 at 09:38 (113297)

My 8 year old son is complaining of heel and foot pain when he runs and plays sports. It does not bother him walking, rollerblading, or jumping on a trampoline; only when he runs. What do you know about this and what is the treatment, if any? Thanks, Kay

Sever's disease involves pain and inflammation about the growth plate at the back portion of the heel bone. It generally occurs in children from ages 8 to 13. Does your son have a definite diagnosis?

Orthotics with a deep heel cup are very effective in treating Sever's disease. Certain shoes such as soccer shoes can be harder on this problem -- make sure that the heel is higher than the ball when looking for that ype of shoe.
