The term 'marrow edema' does not refer to a diagnosis. It can be a finding on MRI which can be found after trauma. It has limited meaning as an isolated finding so we would need more complete information before attempting to provide any guidance.

Dear Dr.Ed, I had a M.R.I. done of my ankle and the results came back showing that I have,Osteopenia, and Osteochondritis dissecans,Degenerative bone changes, and a Marginal Osteophyte formation in the ankle area,it also showed marrow signal abnormality in the dome of the talus anteriorly and abnormality in the adjacent subcortical tibia.Doctor could you tell me what is going on,and what can all these symptoms do to my ankle, and is my ankle in bad shape with all these symptoms I've mentioned above.Doctor hope you answer my questions for me. Sincerely,Robert

I will be happy to discuss the meaning of those findings but has not the doctor who ordered the MRI discussed the findings with you?
It is likely that you injured the ankle previously in a manner that cartilage was sheared off the joint causing islands of cartilage and bone in the joint. It also sounds like there is some extra bone in the front part of the ankle joint which may be interfering with ankle joint function and possibly causing some impingement of tissues in that part of the joint.
What did the MRI show concerning the condition of the ligaments of the ankle? Are you seeing a specialist?

Hello Dr.Davis, Yes!! my Doctor went over the M.R.I. with me,and he told me my ankle is in very bad shape,do you agree with my Doctor.Dr.Davis what is Marrow signal abnormality in the dome of the talus anteriorly and abnormality in the adjacent subcortical tibia, what does this mean.Dr.Davis my Doctor won't do anything with my ankle because I have RSD,and he said if he does any thing surgically it would make my RSD worse, that all my doctor told me.Dr.Davis if you give me your Email address I would send you pictures of my foot and ankle to view, only if you want to,Doctor what would these symptoms I mentioned would do to my ankle. My Doctor did not say anything about the condition of my ligaments of my ankle,he only told me my ankle is in very bad shape and if he does anything it would make my RSD worse,so I'm a mess and confuse about this.I had a Triple Arthrodesis of the hindfoot and forefoot in 1983, I also have foot drop,Doctor can RSD cause all these symptoms I have in my ankle.Hope you can eplain to me what is actually going on in my ankle with the symptoms I have mentioned in my previous Email for me. Sincerely,Robert

I am so sorry to hear you have the monster RSD , I too lived with this and all kinds of foot problems. I am not sure how long you have had the RSD but it is important to get the RSD under control first, is it in the ankle that you are having problems with??? I know everyone has different opinions but after 2 years and three surgerys on my foot I did a series of 4 sympathetic nerve blocks in 10 days and the monster has gone. Of course any surgerys you are thinking of doing should be done with a block for the RSD. Hopefully you have a good PM Doctor to help you through this. If I can help let me know.
