Parallels between war and surgeryPosted by Max K on 3/26/03 at 02:11 (114622)
Surgery is feared.
Surgery is invasive.
Surgery is destructive.
Surgery is dangerous.
Surgery can be painful.
Surgery can make you bleed.
Surgery can cause new problems, worse than the original.
Surgery can cause loss of function.
Surgery has killed many people.
Surgery is not guaranteed to work.
Surgery is expensive.
With all that going against it, why choose to have surgery, ever?
Because sometimes, it's the only thing that can save a life,
or a limb, or somebody's quality of life.
Which of the following persons is qualified to make the decision of whether to do surgery?
1. Michael Moore
2. Susan Sarandon
3. a board-certified surgeon
4. Barbra Streisand
Imagine anti-surgery protest rallies in front of hospitals across the country:
What would the protest signs say?
'Not on my body'
'Don't spill our blood to make doctors rich'
'Why surgery when aspirin worked before?'
'Give the placebo-effect a chance'
'We don't want your stupid surgery'
