Re: who is the best ?Dr. David S. Wander on 4/22/03 at 18:18 (116857)
I'm a foot doctor and I think I'm pretty well respected, but I don't know if there is a 'best'. There are many excellent doctors, some have specific areas of expertise. Let me know the geographic area you're in and I'll be happy to make some recommendations. I'm in Philadelphia and there are many excellent doctors in the area as well as across the U.S. Get a little more specific and I'm sure I can make an excellent recommendation.

i'm looking for my brother , who fell off a roof and smashed his heel . he has had three operations in two years and the so called best doctor out of Baltimore can't seem to make the pain go away and is telling him to keep in mind he may have to have his foot cut off , my brother is only 34yrs old . we are from the Williamsport ,PA area . i'm trying to find out if the doctor he is seeing is the only solution to his problem or if there is someone more qualified .

There are many excellent doctors in the Chicago area. The two that I would recommend are Lowell Scott Weil Sr., who practices in the suburbs or Dr. Fred Rahimi. I went to school with Dr. Rahimi and would highly recommend him. He is bright, ethical and a gentleman. If you make an appointment to see him let him know Dr. David Wander recommended him.
The injury you describe can be devastating, even in the hands of the 'best' doctors. It is an injury that can take months/years to heal, and often there is constant residual discomfort or disability.

There is a book that you can purchase titled 'America's Top Doctors'
http://www.Americas Top Doctors.com http://www.Castle Connolly.com.
Sometimes you have to travel. There is an Orthopaedic doctor listed in Philadelphia. His name is Dr. Keith Leslie Wapner MD. His speciality is Foot Surgery. Phone # (215) 829-3668. This is just one of the entries, I know nothing about him. You'd have to check him out.
There are other M.D.'s listed in N.Y. and Baltimore who also specialize in Foot and Ankle reconstruction.
Dr. Arthur Manoli M.D. in Pontiac, Michigan (248) 858-6773 posts here does a lot of foot and ankle reconstruction may be able to provide you with a referral to someone in your own area.
My suggestion is to perhaps get a copy of this book, check out some names and then write to the doctors sending your brothers history and medical records for review.
Most doctors will reply and you may find the trip to see one of them beneficial either in providing additional help or supporting the treatment already completed. Second and third opinions never seem to hurt.
Hope this helps.

I would try Dr Manoli. I have seen more than a few nasty calcaneal fractures he has fixed. Needless to say that injury can be very nasty as it is usually from a head on accident but mostly from fall of ladders or roofs. It is more involved that just getting all the pieces screwed back as close as possible. The function of the ankle and damage to deeper joints can also be a problem.
He is a bit far away but he often gets patients from far away. If amputation is being discussed a plane trip is nothing imho. Who has he already seen, One specialist I am aware of in Baltimore area is Mark Myerson, he did a few surgeries on Grant Hill the basketball player

This doesn't answer your question, but may be of interest. There is a guy in Canada who was a farmer and fell off the roof and broke his foot (heel I think) - is this sounding familiar. Anyway, he created a 'knee crutch' which allows the person to walk without emcumbering his arms with crutches. You didn't indicate your brother might need this, but most people don't know about it so thought I'd pass it along. A few years ago when I bought one they weren't available in the United STates (cuz of marketing - a growing company that hadn't expanded that far yet as best I understand). There was someone in the U.S. that was going to start selling them (online I think), but I'm not sure what happened (I drove to Canada and bought one). Just thought I'd pass it on - your story of your brother reminded me of the story of the inventor.

Thank you for your response. There is also a very accomplished foot/ankle ortho. surgeon in Glenview, Il and I understand from many sources that he does some very complicated foot ankle surgeries and is the best in the US. I know people come from all over. His name is Dr. Steve Haddad. Have you heard of him? I would not go to him now with my TTS/PF problems because I feel he is seeing such major problems it just seems mundane. He would not ever give me that feeling. He is such a great person, a true professional and very caring. Maybe he could help Tom's brother or it is worth a consultation.
In fact I had PT at this ILL Bone and Joint Institute it is called and I remember a man, a construction worker who had fallen off a ladder and had injured his heel. It has been a few years ago so I do not recall the particulars but he thought this Dr. Haddad walked on water. Hope this helps. I know it is far away. Pam

Does anyone know of any good doctors in the Los Angeles, CA, specifically the Ventura County area?
