How many of you have been able to run after ESWT?Posted by Molly H on 5/11/03 at 12:22 (118324)
Hi! I am a 38 year old female who has suffered from PF for 8 months. I was running 25 miles a week until one day I woke up with knifing pain (in both feet) It constantly hurts both in my heals and arches and I had to completley quit running several months ago. Well nothing as helped .. taping, PT, vioxx, cortisone injections so this Wednesday I am getting ESWT. My question is this... is there anyone on the board that knows the timeline it is safe to run? Also, is it possible to run? My pod is saying 4 weeks. I have read that is takes 6-12 to heal. I don't want to do anything where it will damage it.
I will keep you all posted that have asked if it helps your arches too.

Hi Molly - I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I would not consider running for quite a while. You will need a take care of your feet and make a slow return to athletic activity. I would start with biking, swimming, deep water running, etc.

We allow the return to running after six weeks. I have many long distance runners who are pain free post eswt after three years . The return to runner means one half your usually distance. No more then three miles. If painful stop . No running past the pain. In between and or before six weeks try biking, and swimming

I am 47 years old and a runner of 6 years (doing 30 miles a week)and have been battling PF for over 20 months using all the conservative methods. I finally had ESWT treatment in February 2003 and I am on week 10 since the procedure. I finally went out and did my first mile last week and my heel is a liitle sore now. We need to judge the healing based on how the foot feels 24-36 hours after exercise. I believe that I am NOT totally healed yet. I am not sure how long the healing process takes but I have been told to do other types of exercise to remain healthy.....I still can't wait to run though...It is the best for me...but please take your time if you want to run again.

This is what I am afraid of,,,getting the surgery and then still not being able to walk, run. After 10 weeks, you would think you would be heeled by now. Thanks for posting. I must make a decision soon concerning my heel spurs, and inflammed facia.

How long after the ESWT were you able to run Humprey? I am a competitive runner not marathons ,just 10k's. Not running is killing me I basically have NOT run for 8 months!

Don't go by my experience. I never really gave up running- I just ran shorter distances at slower times until the discomfort was tolerable. My first marathon was about 6 months after treatment. If you can't run walk- if you can't walk then stretch. I think the docs will agree that regular stretching after treatment is very important.

I was wondering if you could e-mail me on your running progress now! I am 6 weeks post ESWT tomorrow. I have seen a lot of improvement but, am NOT pain free.
