heel spurs

Posted by Tracy N. on 6/20/03 at 20:42 (122496)

I AM A 42 YR OLD WOMEN WITH SEVERE FOOT PAIN. LAST YR I THREW AWAY ALL SHOES THAT WERE NOT FLATS OR LOW SLIDES. I AM A 2TIME BILATERAL FOOT SURGERY VETERAN (UNSUCCESSFUL MC BRIDE AT 19, SUCCCESSFUL BUNIONECTOMY AT 24), SO I WEAR QUALITY SHOES.
WHEN LOSING THE SHOES DIDN'T HELP I WENT TO A PODIATRIST WHO DIAGNOSED HEEL SPURS AND RESTING PAIN. I TOLD HIM SURGERY WAS NOT AN OPTION. I GOT ORTHOTICS BUT OPTED NOT TO USE THE STEROID HE PRESCRIBED.
MY PAIN HAS INCREASED.
THE PAST YEAR HAS MADE ME RECONSIDER SURGERY. SHOULD I TAKE THE STEROIDS (I FEAR THE LONGTERM EFFECTS) OR SHOULD I CONSIDER SURGERY FOR AN IMMEDIATE AND UNMEDICATED SOLUTION?

Hi Tracy:

I would not consider surgery at this point. Have you had any physical therapy, night splints oral NSAIDS? You have many options before surgery. Also ESWT is non invasive option.
