ESWT a suitable treatment for sesamoid problems?

Posted by Billie C. on 7/17/03 at 09:29 (124613)

I have a painful sesamoid and it most likely has to be removed. My question is, can the surgery be avoided by treating the area with ESWT?
Thank you.

It has been used. IF there in a non-union of the sesamoid bone then it can be used. This would be off label and non-FDA approved

Thank you for your reply. In my case the sesamoiditis is caused by arthritis, and one bone would be removed. Would it be possible to use ESWT as a treatment, and are any risks?

Thank you for your reply. No, actually I haven't had an insert like that. I don't think my doctor has mentioned them at all. So far my problem has been treated with NSAIDS and steroid injections. Could they help at this point?

If the problem is from arthritis then ESWT isn't a good choice .
