Extra bone forms on top of a diseased big toe joint as the body's attempt to limit motion (splint) the joint. If that extra bone is removed, allowing motion, then the joint can sometimes hurt more. The key question is... 'what is the condition of the caritlage in the joint?' If the cartilage is in bad shape, more than a cheilectomy may need top be performed.
