Achiles tendon surgery to prevent foot ulcers?Posted by Sharon W on 8/14/03 at 13:22 (126939)
Here's one that might interest anyone with diabetes in their family, as well as anyone with achiles tendon problems (excerpts follow):
'Surgery to lengthen the Achilles tendon significantly reduces the risk that people with diabetes will suffer recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers.'
'That's the finding of a study in the August issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.'

The press is always intersting .... 'New relief....'
Nothing really new here and it is valid for only a small percentage of diabetics with ulcers. Diabetics who have a contracted heel cord only, face increased pressure on the forefoot and so if the heel cord is lengthened, then pressure can be lessened at the ball of the foot.
Our resident pedorthists here have, for years, been dealing with this entity via use of extra depth shoes with rocker soles and metatarsal bars.
