Alaska anyone?Posted by Necee on 8/20/03 at 00:19 (127367)
I have a chance to take a trip to Alaska next May. Have any of you been there? If so, what do you suggest I see and do while there. There is the possibility of taking a cruise up the inside passage, then coming down along the outside passage.
I've been saving my pennies, hopefully I'll have enough money gathered up by this Fall.
Any suggestions about touring this beautiful part of the country is greatly appreciated.

I have not been to Alaska - but I have been to very northern BC which borders on Alaska...it is some of the most beautiful country I've seen.
Given the chance - I'd take that trip in a second! During that time of year - I don't think you'll have much darkness at all...makes it easy to stay up late and get up early.

I have been to Alaska many times but never drove the Alaskan Highway which sounded rough to me. It is breath taking but no place I would want to live. They do have mosquitos there the size of birds.

Necee after many years and many places I have concluded you can have fun anyplace if you are with the right people. I bet a cruise up the coast of Canada to Alaska would be beautiful. I have always wanted to take a trip on the Orient Express which would be my ultimate trip. There are some great train trips in Canada that I would like to try also. Go for that trip to Canada as it will be a big change from Texas.

Hello Necee - my husband and I spent three weeks in Alaska several years ago. We did not do a cruise but rather flew in to Anchorage then drove, drove and drove! We spent a great deal of time on the Kenai Peninsula, camped on a ferry to Valdez, trained to Denali - and loved every second of it. We also, during hikes in some semi-wilderness, met most of those giant mosquitos John h was talking about. And.....we played ball in a Midnight League as we were there during the summer solstice. I do, however, regret not going further west than Anchorage or north from Denali.
I suspect that no matter what you do you'll enjoy it.

I have no experience to share, Necee, but it sounds wonderful! You seem to enjoy the outdoors, so this sounds like a great opportunity. I hope you can go and tell us all about it!
My very first thought when reading your post was how nice it would be to go somewhere COOL!

I lived in New Orleans for six months when I was between two and three years old. Of course I don't remember a thing. I have always wanted to visit. Someday I may just take Carole C. up on that offer to go out to dinner!

my big memories of New Orleans was going there at spring break. We did not have much money but at that time could buy all the shrimp you could eat for $1.00. We stayed free at Tulane and had lots of fun with no money to speak of.
