Hi, I'm the crazt girls who wrote in last week about being in so much pain I wanted to end it all. (STUPID IDEA.) Anyhow, I had ESWT done four and a half weeks ago and I too am in a lot of pain still. The docotor put me on Vicadine, which just put me to sleep and I think it lead to part of my depression. He changed the pain medication to Ultracet. Which seem to help a lot. It's similar to Vicaden but dones put you in the fog. I don't know whatgets rid of the pain permently--but this med is helping me fuction. Best adcive, stay off your feet and lots of heat to the region.
Re: eswt 8/03barb s on 8/25/03 at 19:00 (127964)

ESWT usually starts to see results only after 12-16 weeks. Patience is key. Hard to do, but must be done. Pain withing the weeks soon after the ESWT is normal. Many people have to go back for a second time. Some for a third occasionally. Usually seems one or two treatments do the job. This can be especially frustrating for an athalete. I was one also. Running. I will get the ESWT soon. but what I ve learned from this board, from Dr.Z, and the other fabulous Pods here, is that - it does normally take 12 or so weeks to really 1. start to get the real benefit of ESWT 2.It takes a while for some of the pain from ESWT itsef to go away. Ending 'it all' is no option for any athalete, and should not be an option for anyone. You have to strive - and try to learn to control the pain, and get the biomechanics corrected (if you have a problem), and Nutritional deficiencies (if you have them) corrected. Some people have a limb discrepancy, some people have excessive pronation, some have bone loss along with lack of support and high arches, so many problems. Haglunds, Tarsel Tunnel can result later - even if your original probem was classic PF. Seems to me, if these things are not corrected, and the tissue (damaged) dealt with with ESWT and all other things (Insoles, taping, stretching, ice, heat) - then you will always have problems with your feet on and off at times, if not all the time. Ending it all should never be an option. No matter the pain level - because a good podiatrist will eventually get you mostly, if not totally pain free. but you have to be agressive for years possibly. In my case, severe pain for 2 years. But I managed it with info on this site, and some I came up with on my own. I have about half the pain I had before, but it's always there. I need custom inserts to correct biomechanics, and I need the damaged tissue dealt with, with ESWT (maybe twice) and my own PT (my own PT was far more effective then previous medical PT I got)
Never give up - ESWT will also becaome less expensive over time. Lasic was at one time very expensive. I think ESWT will become even more refined in time, and much, much better, and it will be commonplace. Have hope.
Re: eswt 8/03Kristie R. on 8/25/03 at 20:33 (127978)
My doctor told me the worst thing you can do is ice. So I use a medicine bag and fill it with hot tap water and put my shoed feet on twice a day for twenty minutes. I believe DR.Z told me about the heat. I don't know there seems to a lot of different advice out there. But give it a try.
On the subject of excersise. I miss it so much as well. But I did find that I can bike ride without too much pain. I don't go very fast, nor for very long.(15 minutes) I look like an old lady. But it does get me out of the house. I've been home for four weeks now.
I can't believe your working. I'm so impressed and jelous. I was laid off a couple of weeks before the surgery. I used to work for Lord and Taylors and loved my job. The ironic thing is working on my feet all day and climing ladders caused the problem. So I guess things happen for a reason and it's a good thing that I got laig off.
I'm interested to know: can you drive? That's when I'm in th most pain; before and after the ESWT.
I'm sorry to read about your doctor. Try asking the doctor's here on the message board some questions. They seem very nice and helpful.
Best of luck with your healing. I'll be thinking about you. We seem to have a lot in common---feet a lest. Keep me posted. And about the statement you meantioned about ending it all. Read the posting I made a week ago on the Social Suppost message board---called 'suicide' All these wonderful people wrote back and were so helpful. They had very important thing to tell me. And I'm sure your 13 year old would miss you terribly.

Hi Will B.
I loved what yo wrote. Your have definitely done your home work. I'm in a similar situation as Barbara and believe part of my problem is very tight calf muscles and a tight achillis tendon. You meantion biomechanic orthics. What are they?
Re: eswt 8/03-biomechanicsKristie R. on 8/25/03 at 20:40 (127983)
Sorry Barbara--I ment socked feet on the medicine bag.

I am often amazed at what advice that some of our posters get from their Doctor. Kristie's Doctor tells her the worst thing she can do for PF is ice. It seems most other Doctors highly recommend iceing after activity. I personally use ice and use heat when I am in a whirlpool. Neither will cure the condition but probably both can be appropriate at various times. If your foot swells as a result of PF it would seem ice would be very appropriate. To the guy who said you would have PF for life I think the statistics are 90% of PF patients each year are cured (estimates are that the number of people involved are between 3-6 million.. Ice got me though some real painful episodes.
Re: eswt 8/03john h on 8/26/03 at 10:54 (128040)
barb s: if you suffer from back pain you might give Lidocain patches a try. They are sold only by prescription and I think under the name Lidoderm Patches. No side effects and you can use them every day. They are widely used for shingles but many back patients have found comfort with them.
Re: eswt 8/03john h on 8/26/03 at 11:55 (128044)
Kristie: You sound like a much different person than last week which is great. Keep on chugging and you will find the things that will make you better.
Re: eswt 8/03Dorothy on 8/26/03 at 14:21 (128061)
You are carrying a very heavy load, Barb S.
Is there a connection between your shoulder problems and your foot problems, something systemic?
The tone of your note is one of anxiety and pressure. Is that how you feel?
Last question - maybe you have mentioned in another post that I missed - is it PF that you are dealing with in your feet?
I hope this day has some parts of it at least that are better for you.
Re: eswt 8/03 DRIVING IN PAINmaureen r on 8/26/03 at 15:43 (128076)
I'm in great pain myself from failed foot surgery & had ESWT, but don't think it has helped much. But... you can have your car modified to drive with your left foot pretty cheaply. Find someone who does the vans for the handicapped & get a accelerator pedal extender put on. It only costs a few hundred & can relieve your pain. I've been driving that way for several years now. I took a few driving lessons; the company who will do the modifications probably knows a driving school that has an extender pedal to practice with. Good luck.
Re: Pain management !!!BrianG on 8/26/03 at 16:43 (128081)
Barb / Kristie,
You have the right to be treated for your pain! Ask you doctor to refer you to either a pain clinic, or a doctor who specializes in pain management. I have been in your shoes, and am now able to live without the disabeling pain I used to have. I still have pain, but my daily pain meds help me tremendously. The pain meds you both have mentioned are for acute pain. There are others used for chronic pain, which are time released.
PS: If your doctor won't refer you, use a search engine. Type in 'pain managment' and 'your state'.

Re: eswt 8/03 DRIVING IN PAINKristie R. on 8/26/03 at 19:35 (128099)
Thanks Maureen for the idea about the car. Driving is what cause the most pain. My husband thinks I'm a little crazy, but he know how painful it is, so I will look into it. Great Idea!
Re: Pain management !!!Kristie R. on 8/26/03 at 19:36 (128101)
Thanks Brian. I wil also talk to my docotor.
Re: eswt 8/03Kristie R. on 8/26/03 at 19:46 (128103)
Hi Barbara---I was checking in to see how you were doing. I was think a lot about you today. I do have some goo news I drove myself to Pt and the chiropractor, first time in weeks. While I was at PT, the therapist told me that ESWT is basically re-injuring your feet. They is going to be some swelling and brushing (a lot that you will not see) that's why it hurts so much. But the swelling will GO AWAY.
I can feel the difference today. I actually did something. So there is hope for us.
Keep the faith---I know will me dancing soon.
And I was the one who wanted to end it all last week. Just hang in there please.
Re: Pain management !!!BrianG on 8/27/03 at 08:39 (128133)
Good, a lot of people do not know that there are doctors who are pain management specialists. My own doctor had to be educated in this area. He told me that he had a total of 4 hours of training in 'chronic pain' when he was in school. Pretty sad if you ask me, and he is not an old timer either, I'd say he's about 40!
Re: eswt 8/03Kristie R. on 8/27/03 at 10:47 (128146)
Thanks John. I feel a little more 'in control' of my pain. I really believe being in the house all day my myself and the vacadine, which but me in a fog, mad me so depressed. So I changed the pain medication and invited people over to visit which is helped a lot. Thank you to everyone that has gotten through a terrible period in my life. I don't feel better yet but I have more knowledge from reading this sight and know there are people like you who care. Thanks
Re: eswt 8/03Aly on 8/27/03 at 12:04 (128158)
Good for you for being proactive and inviting people over. Sitting at home and waiting for the PF to heal is no way to live! Keep it up! =D>
I may have overlooked it if you already posted about this, but how did your Dr appointment go - I believe it was on Monday?
