Arthritis--big toe

Posted by Doug D. on 8/28/03 at 12:00 (128278)

I've been to two doctors for a pain in the big toe. Both agree that it is in a fairly advanced arthritic state. One recommends fusion. The other recommends a procedure whereby bone is removed and scar tissue grows back in its place. Which procedure is more effective with less risk of side effects or is there a better procedure than these two suggested. Also,I run and on occasion play basketball. Would either of these procedures adversely affect these activities and if so,is there a procedure that would not?
