Flat Feet

Posted by Alan T on 9/27/03 at 12:24 (131231)

Having inherited flat feet from my father, I have found arch supports uncomfortable at best. With the onset of Fasciitis, I find them excruciating. Are there orthotics specifically intended for flat footed people which don't use arch supports?

Alan:

Your post helps to illustrate the difference between orthotics and arch supports. It is not necessary (but sometimes helpful) for orthotics to place pressure in the arch in order to be effective.

Most over the counter or non-custom 'orthotics' tend to act primarily as arch supports as the manufacturer has no other way to achieve the desired effect. True custom molded orthotics, when designed for PF, act by preventing subtalar joint overpronation and midtarsal joint oversupination.
