How long before I see results from ESWT?Posted by David B on 10/03/03 at 06:32 (132035)
I had my 2nd ESWT done on Sept 30th I was wanting to know how long it will be before I see results from ESWT.

Some patients obtain immediate pain relief. Some pain reduction is gradual over a four month period. Some WON'T start to see pain relief for 8-12 weeks. I hope this is helpful. Have you seen any relief yet?

I have bursitis in both hips. I have had five treatments each hip with limited pain relief. I finished my last treatment three weeks ago. Is there any indication, if any, when I will begin getting pain relief?

I have bursitis in one hip and although I've not had ESWT I was able to get the pain under control with exercises specifically for my hip and pelvic area.
I began them in physical therapy and have continued them working with a trainer at my health club who happens to be a physical therapist by day.
My condition stemmed from the fact that sloppy muscles surrounding the hip joints allowed too much movement and rubbing. By tightening and strengthing these muscles along with others it helps hold my pelvis in alignment and eliminate my pain.
Every case is different, and perhaps you've already gone this route. I wanted to avoid a steroid injection and was not offered ESWT so this is what I've been doing for both my shoulder and hip bursitis.
So far so good, pain relief and stronger muscles have been my result, but it didn't happen over night. I've been doing this program for over 8 months and was told to continue these specific exercises for the rest of my life to maintain stability in those areas.
In addition my trainer, with my doctors approval, has provided a total exercise program for me including cardio work. He's is a jem and personally I feel more comfortable with him because being a physical therapist I know his own training goes well beyond that of most trainers.
The unfortunate part is cost, which I realize not everyone can afford, but if your doctor has not given you exercises perhaps you could ask for them and begin at home although I found physical therapy was a good place to start this program.
Hope my story helps and that your ESWT kicks in soon.

I know of a lot of people who have had success with ESWT for trochanteric bursitis. Sometimes it takes 6-8 weeks AFTER the LAST treatment for some relief. Continue your physical therapy and be patient. Have you had any change? Better of worse? Sometimes good, sometimes bad? Are there any differences from before your treatments?

My doctor never said anything concerning physical therapy. Is this a requirement for success?

I want to thank you for your comments.

I have good days and bad days. I have not been doing physical therapy. The doctor did not indicate that I should do this. Should I be doing physical therapy?

Yes....you do need to rehab. The fact that you are having good & bad days indicates to me that you are making progress. Be patient and good luck. Definitely recommend physical therapy.

I was advised today that I do not have bursitis in my hips. I have scar tissue from previous operations in the hip area. Is ESWT effective for scar tissue repair?

Scar tissue cannot be repaired using ESWT.
In most cases, scar tissue from surgery over the ESWT treatment focal area can be a hindrance for ESWT treatment, especially using low energy ESWT.
