metatarsal stress fracturePosted by Helen K on 12/26/03 at 12:58 (140803)
Has anyone experienced a metatarsal stress fracture, with pain on top of the foot where the 1st toe (next to the big toe) meets the foot? I've had conflicting diagnoses and am off for a third opinion. (these are difficult to diagnose apparently because they don't show up easily on x-rays). I'm not sure exactly how to handle this; the doc who said I had a stress fracture told me to keep off it and when I walk, not to bend the toes (i.e. walk only on my heel) until the foot heals. Help...

We have seen this a few times. We have either added thin carbon graphite material inside the shoe or on the bottom of an orthosis in order to keep the foot from bending. We have also modified shoes to a more aggressive rocker bottom in order to have the foot 'roll' over instead of bend. You might want to find a C.Ped in your area and ask to see what they can do.
