ESWT & torn plantar fasciaPosted by Maureen W on 2/06/04 at 14:48 (143798)
I was wondering in anyone had any knowledge of the success rate of ESWT performed on a foot with a torn plantar fascia verses an intact, but inflamed plantar fascia. My plantar fascia is tearing from my heal, and my doctor is recommending ESWT, but I could not find any results to see if ESWT would work as well with my condition. Any information would be great. Thanks.

The sucess depends on the duration, extend, and the experience your treating doctor. I have treated torn fascia but never in the acute stage

Can you please explain what 'acute stage' means. Thank you.

This is a time period of a few weeks . How long since the injury??

My dr. has been treating me since May, '03. There was no accident, just started with the pain. He has tried all methods, strapping, cortizone, orthodics, boot, cast, and MRI's still continue to show tearing. He suggested this as another method of treatment.

If its insertional I would use ESWT

By 'insertional', do you mean tearing in the middle? Do you feel that ESWT woud not work if it is already tearing away from the heal?

'Insertional' means that the pain is where the fascia inserts into the calcaneus (heelbone). This is at the inside bottom of the heel, an inch or so from the back. The associated 'first step pain' felt with the first steps one takes after getting out of bed or getting up from sitting, is also considered to be a pre-requisite for ESWT.

Thanks Julie. That is what I am having, and that is where the tear is starting. I am going to see an orthopod this Thursday to confirm if ESWT is for me. From all that I have read, ESWT seems to be the way to go.

It sounds as though you are a candidate for ESWT, but see what the doctor says. If you have it I hope it helps. Best of luck.
