Heel spur caused by hammer toePosted by Jack A on 2/18/04 at 15:07 (144617)
I have just had xrays of my foot and they showed hammer toe, some mild arthritis and a small spur. Since I have had this pain for several weeks my Dr has suggested heat for 15 minutes 3 or 4 times a day. I have not seen a foot Dr as yet. Should I use heat or Ice? and if I need to see a specialist, would a Foot Dr or Orthpaedic Dr be preferred?

Where was the 'spur' on the foot?
If the shoes you are wearing are rubbing the top of your hammer toes, look for something called a hammer toe splint, or Budin splint. This will hold your toes down if they are not to stiff. Look for shoes with a deeper toe box in order to protect your toes.

The spur is on the heel. I wear soft topped shoes, and have done so for several years. The hammer toes seem to be not too bad. All my pain is in the heel and the bottom of the foot. I negeleted to mention that I have slight arthritis in tyhe toes.
Thanks for your response.

If the x-ray showed a spur looking thing coming out from the bottom of the heal, more than likely that is just where the soft tissue of the plantar fascia forms into the hard tissue of the calcaneous. The spur is actually above the plantar fascia and is not the cause of pain.
I would suggest a properly made orthosis to give the proper support to the fascia. This will also allow your weight to be distributed evenly and help some with the arthritis.

Thank you that information is very helpful. I just had my orthos re-made as the ones I was wearing had worn down. I think that contributed quiute a bit to my problem. I also just inserted heel gels just yesterday. As of this am the heel feels much better. I hope it stills feels better after I run some errands later today.
