PF & TARSAL COALITION

Posted by LIL on 3/17/04 at 16:12 (147180)

Last April I had the endoscopic release surgery for PF. After about 6 weeks post surgery I was in a little pain and we got custom orthotics that seem to help that problem. Actually now about a year later I rarely have pain in my heel.
When I went to the specialist last April he mentioned I had a Tarsal Coalition on the left side of my foot (same foot I have PF). It was never symptomatic until after I had the PF surgery. There is a history in my family of Tarsal Coalitions. My younger sister and my dads brother both have them in the left foot as well. My sister has had 6 operations (and finally had a triple artodisis (not sure how to spell it sorry).
I have been in a lot of pain even with the orthotics. Was put to sleep and injected in the joint with cortizone. Which seemed to help a bit. My doctor is now saying that he thinks I need to have it resectioned. My question is I am 30 years old. Is it a good idea to have this resectioned at my age or will it cause more problems? Kind of hesitant to have this done considering what my sister went through anyway. Any advise or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am going for a second opinion next month before I even think about surgery but thought I would ask.

Oh yeah forgot to mention when he gave me the injection in the joint he used X-ray to place the shot and said that i have a large bar and he really thinks i should have it resection. He doesnt think it will grow back (my sisters did). What are the chances of it growing back?

I think resection at your age is a toss-up. The amount and angle of your foot and ankle would dictate resection vs fusion. The type of surgical options range from removal of the coalition to fusing the coalition joint to a triple arthrodesis.
