Heel Lump - Achilles tear?

Posted by Lorraine F on 3/30/04 at 16:19 (148152)

Aug/02 slipped off sloped step. High pain threshold - carried on. On feet a lot and Nov/02 developed a painful lump on right ankle toward back of foot below ankle bone level. No confidence in current GP and no option to change. Apr/03 went to Pod. X-ray (normal) Ultrasound (evidence of achilles tear). No advice from either Pod or GP other than 'stay off it'.
I now use a cane outside the house. Cannot walk more than 15 min without pain. Overweight (have gained back because of no exercise). Have appt with Orthopedic Surgeon (500 miles away). Any suggestion re the problem and any suggestions as to what I should know before seeing the OS?

Lorraine:
Five hundred miles away? Do you live in a rural area? To what extent is the tear healed? A partial tear?

Specialists in the area where I live are iffy, at best. Kelowna has the reputation of being 'World Class'. The Ultra-sound Tech told me there appeared to be a partial tear (Apr 2003). I looked at the screen, but it meant nothing to the untrained eye. I feel that the tear has probably healed but I have the lump, plus, when I'm mobile too long, something in the back of my ankle seems to swell, making movement painful. I have to pick up the Ultra-sound report to take with me to Kelowna on Apr 26th. The X-rays are on line - did both feet and showed no dissimilarities.

Lorraine:
X-rays would not show a soft tisssue injury. A re-do of the ultrasound or an MRI could show you more.
