? About Birkenstocks

Posted by Angela A. on 4/15/04 at 18:07 (148981)

Could anyone tell me......I see so much positive comments here about Birkenstocks, but not sure if I can afford them at this time....
Do the 'cheaper' versions of the cork-bottomed sandals do the same thing, or does it need to be Birkenstocks specifically?

Once upon a time I tried a Lands End version that looked exactly like the Birkenstock Arizona. Another time I tried an LL Bean version. I am not as loyal a fan of Birkenstocks as some people here are but I do wear them and have for many years (I just haven't experienced that they are especially helpful for PF or Achilles - for me) - but I can say that neither of those other brands were like Birkenstocks in fit or comfort and both were cork, had similar arch and toe grip, etc. Something different about them. I haven't tried any other non-Birk look-alikes. It is possible to find lower-priced Birkenstocks, however. You can look at http://www.footprints.com (nice folks) for their 'seconds' which are just fine, also sale/clearance. I have long recommended http://www.sierratradingpost.com but their inventory is hit or miss, but when they have what you want, their prices can be quite good. Also http://www.footsmart.com often has very good sales and specials. You might also consider eBay where you can find good deals, too. So you might do better to look for Birkenstock at lower prices then to look for 'knock-off' types. Just my thoughts.

Hi, Angela! You might try this site from Germany for lower prices:

http://www.gobuyeurope.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv ?

You can opt for the free, ground shipping. The estimated time for delivery is 4-7 weeks, but mine came in 3.

I never thought I would pay so much for a pair of shoes, but when you find something that helps you get better and keep going, it's worth it. I cut corners almost everywhere else - consignment clothes shopping, coupons, etc., but there is no substitution for quality shoes when you have foot problems.

Best wishes!
Suzanne :)

Other places to try are: ebay, http://www.qvc.com , http://www.hsn.com
on ebay search for birkenstock in the ebay stores. There are a couple of birkenstocks companies from Germany listed in there.
I am new to the Birkenstocks but they are seeming to help a little. Anyway I can slip on shoes in the middle of the night.

Angela,

Birks are so expensive and I can understand your reluctance to spend hard-earned and hard to come by money on them. My only suggestion is that you buy them from someplace that will take them back if you find you can't wear them. eBay is an excellent suggestion and while you couldn't return them there, you might be able to find a pair more reasonably priced. You got some great suggestions on other places to look for them.

The way I look at it is that, if they work for you and they seem to help the majority of people with PF, they are the same as going to the doctor, getting medication, physical therapy, etc. They are medicine for your feet. You may only be able to afford one pair but if they give you relief from pain, they'll be worth their weight in gold.

Happy searching!

I have not tried Birkenstocks. However, I have had good results from shoes from Ariat. Ariat originally made western boots but is now making other styles. Some of their shoes are designed specifically for PF. I have bought a clog type shoe and some hiking boots. Using my orthodics, I feel pretty comfortable all day. The shoes seem designed to accomodate the orthodics.

Mickey - Pls. adv. what Ariats you bought.....I have had 2 prs. of Ariats (the Cascade work boot) for use in my barn.....they are good but to me - they are less accommodating in 'width & toe box' for an orthotic....please advise.
I, too, though, have another clog pair of Ariats & they are pretty good - but not like I wish!
