How Long are doctors required to keep records?

Posted by Pat on 1/09/05 at 14:39 (166795)

I'm just curious if there's anything that says how long a doctor is required to keep patient's records (and what if the person is no longer a patient) or does it vary by state law?

One of the doctors will answer, I'm sure, Pat, but in NH, they have to let you know when they're going to purge their records in case you want to have a copy for your own. I think it's every seven years, but I could be wrong on that.

Thanks Kathy - I was just curious. I guess it's good to get a copy of the records if we leave each doctor (I move around alot! LOL)
