Frustration!Posted by tina H on 6/06/05 at 22:01 (176225)
Okay I'm frustrated and just venting... My 14 yr old daughter with bilateral plantar fasciitis got her cast off. After the cast was taken off the foot orthopod's PA came in to chat. He contradicted everything his boss said on the visit before, didn't like the orthotics even though we went to a pedorthist the orth. sent us to, actually I think the orthotics are good this time. We told him my daughters ankle(casted foot) now hurts, his response 'that's normal'. Two days after the cast came off the pf returned worse than ever so now not only does she have pf in both feet she has a sore ankle and achilles tendon in the previously casted foot. I asked him to show me how to tape her foot and he told me to look on heelspur.com. Didn't take the time to do it. I've tried so many taping methods, nothing sticks. Her foot is not sweaty, I think it's just the exremely high arch, the tape just pops off. Someone here suggested benzoine, but non of the pharmacies I've gone to carry it and I can't find it on the internet. Meanwhile the orhtopedist doesn't want to see her for another 3 months. We were supposed to have the other foot casted but of course I said no way! I've dumped this group and made an appt with the Dr. that Dr. Wishnie and Elliot recommended and now I'm kicking myself for listening to the pediatrician instead of them. It's so frustrating to be 14 and have this. It's so frustrating that the so called best foot orthopedist in the area sends his PA into see clients when you think you've made an appt with a doctor. I should have known it was not a good situation when we waited 3 hours the first time she went there. The very best doctor is no good if he/she has too many clients!! Okay, I feel better Thanks! If anyone has an idea about the sticking issue let me know. I tried hair spray that didn't work, may try sticky hair gel next. Suzzane, tried the tape you suggested but it popped off too, thanks anyway. In the meantime we'll wait for our appt with the podiatrist and I've arranged for her to start PT even though the orthopedist told me that would be a waste of time. Sorry this is so long, nothing worse than a mad mom!!!

So sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I know you are trying so hard to help your daughter. I have an idea about taping. I have NOT tried this, so its just a shot in the dark, but maybe someone else on the board will comment about whether it might work.
When my patients have bedsores, we apply a REAL sticky soft foam covering called DUO-DERM. It can be easily cut to any size, and should be available in most pharmacies. My idea is...you apply a thin stip of duoderm to the skin...then let the tape stick to the duoderm. I have done this for patients before with other types of wounds when they have tape allergies. And I think the duoderm (only has to be changed every 2-3 days will come off the foot easier than some of the tapes. Just an idea...hope others will comment.

Rich that would be great! Actually the last orthotics were made by someone who said he knew of you, last name, Colaizzi. The orthotics he made are not like anything I've seen before. I think they are good and the PA just had never seen orthotics like these before either. I certainly would love to have a consultation with you if you come to Pittsburgh! Thanks, Tina

Hmmm...that name does not ring a bell. I might be coming up there for a wedding. Not sure yet.

I think he was previously on the pedorthic certification board, that's why he knew your name. I think he is running for some vacancy on the board, saw that some where. A wedding sounds nice. Is your wifes family from the North, South Hills, or in the city? Its funny how people have very strong opinions about north vs. south hills. We heard both sides when we moved here 3 years ago. Apart from the cold, gray winter, Pittsburgh is a great city!

I've been offline for a couple of days and just got up and running! Long story made short: my daughter installed a router and I messed it up and now have it up and running. Well, I really don't. I have one end of a wire plugged into it and the other end hooked to nothing! Her boyfriend is a computer genius; he can figure it out! At least my computer is running.
I don't blame you for being so upset. As for the PA, you never know with them. If you think you're seeing a well-known specialist and you see a PA, that stinks. But I've found some of the PA's have more time than the doctors and if you get a really good one, they can be very helpful. Obviously, yours wasn't. Your frustration is warranted! I feel so sorry for your daughter. PF stinks at any age but especially so for a child her age.
We went to Pittsburgh last year for a wedding and I loved it, and I'm not a city person by any stretch of the imagination. I even went up the hill on the lift. You'll have to excuse me, had a colonoscopy done today (routine) and I'm still a bit spacey from the meds. But I'm sure you know what I mean. It was really fun. And from the top of the hill, we got to see some fabulous fireworks!
