Hi Debbie,
The first podiatrist I saw recommended the sort of heel inserts you purchased and, like you, I found they didn't help much. I tried another doctor (because I had little confidence in the first) and this second doctor recommeded the orthodics but said I should try those available over-the-counter first before I invested in custom made ones.
I tried the Spenco 3/4 rigid inserts (which I found at our local Walmart for under $15.00!) and they have helped tremendously. (www.spenco.com) They are designed so you can reshape them slightly to fit your arch.
My sister likes the Birkenstock inserts but I found the arch in them to lack the height I need and the metatarsal support to be too aggressive.
A friend who had the custom orthodics made found them very comfortable (though she still struggles with Plantar Fasciitis: she won't give up running long enough to heal) and I would consider them as well, but my insurance won't cover them. Both podiatrists I saw wear them; maybe that speaks to their effectiveness.
Hope this helps.
