Re: Isn't Weight a Major Factor?

Posted by Beej on 11/25/98
I too am overweight, 52 years old, 5'5-1/2" and 184 (was 198!). I have been going to weight watchers with great success (I am losing a pound a week so far). I believe my weight gain (60 pounds since I turned 40!)was a big contributor to my pf. However, my new orthopedic doctor says that while gaining weight is one cause, losing the weight may make less of a difference than one would think. He says strengthening the feet with exercise is the only sure cure. I have now been exercising my feet for two weeks and have seen no difference but he did say it could take up to six months for feet as weak as mine. I also ride a stationary recumbent bike for 30 minutes first thing in the morning--I usually manage 4-5 times a week--and this has contributed a lot to my weight loss and also feeling much better overall. I understand swimming is also great for pf sufferers. I tried the new diet pill (can't remember the name--was it Meridien?) but found it made me extremely jittery and light-headed so didn't continue. Losing weight and keeping it off is really a behavior modification process which I have learned a lot about from having quit smoking after 30 years... Best, Barbara
