Marianne - I have been wearing birks for apx. 1 1/2 yrs. now and have found them to be the only relief for my feet...at the time I started wearing them I was in 24 hr. a day pain and they didn't hurt anymore than every shoe I tried to wear. It took a good 2 weeks before I noticed that hey, my feet were not so sore and I was limping all the time! However, I have heard from several people that at first birks were more or less uncomfortable.

If that's the case, you might try these tips when just beginning birks... First I would start with the sandals in the house only (with socks in the winter). Loosen the straps up so you can easily get your forefinger between the top of your foot and the straps. It is important to be able to move alittle back & forth when you walk - sort of an all day massage.

Then start by just resting your feet in the birks while you read or watch tv etc.(with good posture and feel flat on the floor). This way your facia area becomes adjusted to the new footbed without weight on it. This is the best way to sit at the computer also. Try to avoid crossing your legs or putting your feet up for awhile. Then graduate to walking very slowing and deliberately around the house. Once they feel good to your feet then you can start venturing out with them... and switch to the closed shoes etc. which should be one size larger than the sandals as mentioned above. Good luck with the birks!
