I'm also a teacher and standing for long periods is murder! You need to tell your students that your foot is injured and then try to stay off it as much as possible. I know, that's much easier said than done. I tried standing on one foot and kneeling on a chair with the other, but when I really got into a lesson I would forget and stop kneeling--until the pain made me remember. Then I tried sitting on my desk. It felt weird at first, but the students adjusted quickly and it keeps me off my feet! Yes, try the inserts. Go to Walgreens and get some inexpensive ones first, there are several kinds and you may have good results. If that doesn't work, go to a specialist for custom orthotics. Scott's survey indicates to me that orthotics are one of the most effective cures. (And they fixed me--the first time I had this injury.) For exercise, the only aerobic things I can do are ride the bike or run in the pool (wearing pool shoes with over the counter inserts inside). And don't let this board discourage you! Most people get cured fairly quickly--and then don't need to look for this web site. We are the hardcore, unusual cases, for the most part. Good luck!
