Re: Another Newbie with questions

WoW! Lots of questions. I hope some of my answers and experience is helpful. My pain initially started in one foot. After almost a year it is now in both feet. I have tried inserts (gel). these were not good for me. The cushion was just the opposite of what I needed. My doctor suggested Birks or hard heel cup inserts. He said that it is important to only have the support on the heel. not the entire foot, as the insert provides.

As far as seeing as specialist...I say save your money. I don't know that anyone has THE answer. I just discovered this board today and I have already learned more than I did seeing my doctors and spending lots of $$$.

Does rest help? I say NO! The pain is so intense in the mornings and after sitting for long periods of time, that I can hardly walk. I, too, am starting to throw out my hips, back, etc. from trying to walk differently to compensate for the heel pain. I think you just need to be aware that when the pain is too bad after standing, walking, etc. then you should get off of your feet.

My weight is also a factor. I have put on 40 lbs in the last 18 months. I am 5'10" and weigh about 180. My ideal weight is about 150 because I am large boned. I have a cardioglide exercise machine (which I have obviously neglected) and this is great to use because there is no impact on your feet. It's a great workout and easy to do. The machine cost about $200 from Wal-Mart.

As for the heel cups, I have found the best place to find these is in athletic shoe stores. They usually have a pretty good variety in selection and costs.

I agree with the info on Birks. I wore them for years and the podiatrist said to get rid of them! WRONG!!! The orthopedist I am now seeing recommends them highly and I just ordered two new pair. they do cost more than the imitations, but they are worth it.

Another thing that helps is to stretch your feet and calves in the morning before getting out of bed. ALso, if you have someone kind enough to give you a foot massage...it will hurt so good! Loosening up that area seems to do wonders.

Hope some of this was helpful..good luck.
