reading the message boards, I have not heard of anyone having the plantar release surgery with a gastroc slide. The slide lengthens the ligament in the calf that attaches to the back of the heal. The 2/3 fascia release is usually in the inside of the heel. The gastroc slide gives some relief on the outside of the heel. It requires a 4" incision on the back of the calf. My recommendation to all surgery patients...rest, rest, rest. I spent 10 days off my feet completely with each surgery, 3 weeks on crutches (completely non-weight bearing) and another 3 weeks in a boot. keeping weight off the area will help with scar tissue buildup. I will post again after more time has passed.

After 4 years of heel pain I was really ready for this surgery. I had both feet done at a 10 week interval. I tried all the conservative treatments. Dr. Ford at Kaiser in Redwood City, California was the greatest. I feel that I was allowed to participate in the decision making process. I chose to have the open surgery, after careful research, because it allowed the surgeon the best view of what needed to be done. We did the 2/3 release instead of the full to avoid some of the problems of 100 percent release. The gastroc slide was to release some of the pressure on the back of heel. I was released from the walking boot yesterday and all seems to have gone well. I'm very happy with the choices and the surgery. I do have scars on the back of both calf areas but a little enough price to pay if the surgery is successful. I would like to hear from anyone that has had the gastroc slide. I will post again in a couple of weeks.
