ON July 5, 2002, I had a bone spur removed on my right heel. Achilles tendon was partially detached, bone scraped, tendon "cleaned up", and tendon reattached with small pins. No weight bearing for six weeks. Stitches have been removed after 2 weeks and am wearning hard cast. Crutches, of course. One fall backwards with weight on foot. No apparent damage to tendon.
Date: 08/15/2002 . . . Pain Level: 7 . . . Activity Level: . . . Satisfaction with surgery:
Cast removed 6 weeks after surgery. Am able to flex heel and achilles without pain. No more crutches. Will use wallking cast (moon boot) for several weeks. So far so good.
Date: 09/26/2002 . . . Pain Level: 5 . . . Activity Level: 6 . . . Satisfaction with surgery: 8
It is now twelve weeks from surgery. My surgeon examined me today and said I could gradually resume full activity. I have been out of any kind of cast for three weeks, walking and some more strenuous exercise although not much. The foot is sore with the incision has healed well and the tendon itself feels strong and does not hurt much. Surrounding muscles and tendons get sore easily and I still limp some to the time. He says this will gradually improve. Sometimes I feel like I have a sprained ankle. I intend to exercise more and see if the foot gradually strengthens and the soreness subsides. Tendons on each side of the Achilles seem tender and he said this is normal.
