I had a full plantar fascial release with a nerve entrapment release. The worst pain from the surgery was the nerve entrapment where the scar was (inside rt. foot to ankle). Since the surgery I get twinges sometimes on the bottom of my foot where the fascia is still healing. It happens infrequently but is painful when it occurs. I do not regret surgery, I regret the situation that lead me to surgery (bad physical therapist). I still have the original problem with my foot (front top) but it is not as painful as the plantar fascia was.

Still the same since 8/30/00. The bottom of my foot I would say is completely healed. Once in a very great while I can still feel something "healing" but it goes away very quickly. I have invested in Birkenstocks (the Nebraska Tatami ones) and they have been good to my foot. I had custom orthotics made, but they don't have as much support as the Birks. I will be getting another pair of Birks shortly and will review them as well. I cannot find a good pair of athletic shoes that fit correctly so I hardly wear any. This poses a problem when going to the gym (they don't really care for sandals in the gym area.) If anyone has suggestions for an athletic shoe for a wide foot, please feel free to e-mail. Still have problems with the top of my foot. The docs have given up and say it's a mechanical problem (ie. they don't know and don't care.)

It has been a year this month since surgery. It is 99.9% healed. I do on occassion have some discomfort, but it doesn't last long.

I had my first true test of my foot 2 weeks ago walking around sunny Cancun (yes I'm rubbing it in!) I had some problems walking on sand, so I had to wear shoes.

I did my victory climb up to the top of a Mayan ruin in Chichen Itza, a straight vertical climb. It was mental healing; a last hurtle I had to jump to prove my foot is ok. My feet were sore (the normal kind of sore though) but it was worth it.

I am home now and look forward to ice skating -- something else I had wanted to do for years now and now I can! Too bad they don't have orthotic ice skates, or do they? If anyone knows of any, or for rollerblades, let me know.

1/7/02

It is now 2 years since surgery. I still had problems with my foot that was unrelated to the plantar fascia surgery but was related to my weight. I had initially lost 30 lbs. and automatically felt relief from all my foot pain! The amazing thing was the docs never attributed the stress on my feet to my weight. Although I do have connective tissue disease, I never thought my feet were affected. I can now do anything, including skating which I had wanted to do for so long now.

I had surgery one week ago today and am walking with the help of crutches and a bit of weight on the toes of the operated foot. The heel hurts every day yet and I wonder when it will begin to disappear. I had open side surgery and there are staples. I hope when they come out it will feel better. Right now it feels tight and the ache is still there. I can't really say anything yet about satisfaction with surgery.
