First Entry: Date: 09/01/2000 . . . Pain Level: 3 . . . Activity Level: . . . Satisfaction with surgery:
I have been suffering from heel spur syndrome for over 10 years. I worked through the initial inflamation with conservative management but the symptoms, in part, persisted. I was still plagued with heel discomfort after extended standing. I also still experience a puling sensation at the medial aspect of the heel.

I have 3 pairs of custom orthotics, 5 pairs of OTC. orthotics, and have had three series of cortizon injections. The initial pain went away but the sensation of pulling at the heel persists. So I did the surgery. It was done under local anasthesia. With the aid of a flourascope. It took less than 20 minutes. The pain level was similar to that of getting a tooth filled. I am 16 days post op and have experienced very little discomfort. I can feel the surgical area. It feels as if I have a recent cut. I haven't needed any pain meds. Doctor has cautioned me not to use foot even thought I feel like I can. Stay tuned for progress.

20 days post-op. I'm using crutches to get around the house. Everytime I attempt to use my foot it becomes obvious that it is not healed yet. The doctor told me I could ride a bycicle by day 21, I don't think so. I'm an R.N., I think everyone should know. After this surgery. You will not be walking or riding a bycicle at day 21. Or back to work, if you use your feet.

Date: 09/16/2000 . . . Pain Level: 3 . . . Activity Level: . . . Satisfaction with surgery:
9/16/00 31 days post-op. Just like the doctor said. I'll get some swelling. I use a cane to get around, and sometimes crutches. I can even walk a little without either for very short distances. My foot is VERY WEAK, but I can stand on it.

Date: 09/22/2000 . . . Pain Level: 3 . . . Activity Level: . . . Satisfaction with surgery:
9/22/00. I am 32 days post-op, and my foot is feeling stronger. I am getting therapy 2x weekly. Ultrasound and electro something, It improves circulation. I still have some swelling at the heel and experience moderate discomfort on extended standing. This impresses me as discomfort from the surgical procedure, not from a lack of success of the procedure, that is yet to be determined. Anyway, I can now ride a bycicle, and walk around the house with occasional use of a cane. My foot fatigues easily so then I sit down. If I had a sit down job, I could go back to work. A stand up job would still be out of the question.

Date: 09/29/2000 . . . Pain Level: 1 . . . Activity Level: 7 . . . Satisfaction with surgery: 8
Date 9/29/00, Day 42. I've had 6 therapy treatments and been released by my doctor. To date, I can walk up up to a mile 2x daily, and can again go to the store for myself. My heel discomfort is minimal at this point. I can definately feel the surgical site less each week. I can feel a sensation at the lateral side of my heel. This must be what others talk about swapping one symptom for another. It is not very bothersome and may yet go away. I would have to declare this surgery a sucess. Good luck all. Last entry.
