Some doctors are still in the dark ages or simply uninformed. First I suspect this doctor has never worn Birkenstocks. I also suspect he believes they have a negative like the once famous Earth shoes. If this were in fact the case they wouldnt be good for you as it would cause additional strain on your muscles and achilles. However, they do not have a negative heel but a neutral heel- a major difference!!
Also you could actually put a small wedge lift on Birkis to relieve Pf even more. Any could Birki dealer should have an onsite repair service that does orthopedic modifications.
Keep in mind the doctor has no interest what so ever in seeing you wear Birkenstocks (no profit for him) and seeing you heal quicker (less money for him).
Birkensstock also makes cork arch supports that you can put in shoes you already own. This may be an easy way to get started with birks.
Generally speaking if you feel better wearing Birks keeep doing it. There isn't one proven cure for every one regardless
