John-Got an answer from my physical therapist-sorry it's lengthy.

John, I called the physical therapist who did ultrasound on my foot (waste of time) and she said that the orthotics I have are to control pronation and she felt that the motion control shoes I have now-Saucony Stabil-would end up overcorrecting the problem and she suggested a middle of the line shoe. She doesn't run and told me to stay away from certain styles. The only problem with her answer was that the styles she cautioned against were way out of date! But it seemed to make sense that I would end up overcorrecting. I did try on NB's I can't remember the number-but they were OK. My orthotics are super hard so I ended up buying the Saucony Hurricane which is quite cushiony-maybe too cushiony? To get back to your question about running I don't know either. Common sense says not to run until you have no pain. (Telling that to my battered psyche from not being able to run is a different thing). I can run three miles and be pain free during and after the run. If I press on the bottom of my heel it hurts and once in awhile when I'm standing it aches a bit. I suppose I would be cautious and not run until the pain's gone. I guess we'll have to keep reading and see what happens and what worked for other folks although everyone here seems to still be in the very painful stages of this injury. Runners World has some success stories that are uplifting. From one runner to another-I hope your healing comes quickly and enjoy that first long run-(although at this point a really lousy short run would be wonderful!!). Take care, Kristin
