who's athletic shoes do you recommend?

Ok, first, I don't have plantar fascia. I had Haglunds Deformity, which is a bone growth on the back of the ankle. It was surgically removed last month. The cam walker comes off on Friday and eventually I would like to resume athletic activity.
I would like to reduce the chance of developing more foot problems when playing basket ball and running. I am looking for advice on atletic shoes that offer good support and don't actually cause foot problems. I think Avia are crap, but not sure what shoes are "foot friendly". If anyone would know, it's the people on this board.
Any advice would be appreciated. I'll be heading to Foot Locker or Sportmart next week, any advice? Thanks!!!ps. my surgery went well and I'm doing ok
